Russian pilot killed after plane downed over Syria
A Russian pilot was killed Saturday in fighting with Islamists after his warplane was downed over northwest Syria, Russia's defence ministry and a monitor said. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a powerful jihadist-dominated alliance, said it had shot down the plane on an affiliated media channel but made no mention of the pilot. "We were able to bring down the Russian warplane with a shoulder-fired missile above Saraqib in Idlib this afternoon," said Mahmoud al-Turkmani, who according to the statement heads HTS's "air defence brigade." He said the attack was in retaliation for a ferocious bombing campaign by Russian warplanes over Idlib. HTS, which is dominated by Al-Qaeda's former affiliate, controls Idlib and has sought to fight back a ferocious Russian-backed assault by Syrian government troops. Source

Two train workers are killed and 116 passengers are injured as an Amtrak train traveling on the WRONG track smashes into freight carriages in South Carolina
An Amtrak passenger train, that was traveling on the wrong track, slammed into a freight train parked on a side track in South Carolina early Sunday, killing two Amtrak employees and injuring more than 110 people, authorities said. It was the third deadly wreck involving Amtrak in less than two months. Amtrak's Silver Star was on its way from New York to Miami with eight crew members and about 139 passengers and eight crew members around 2.45am when it plowed into the CSX train at an estimated 59mph, Gov Henry McMaster said. The wreck took place around a switchyard about 10 miles south of Columbia. Source

Chile says 3 youth soccer players killed in bus crash
SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Authorities say three children were killed and at least 20 other people were injured when a bus carrying a Chilean youth soccer team crashed with another bus in Argentina. The early Friday crash happened in a road in the Andes cordillera near the city of Mendoza. Officials said the crash is being investigated. The Colo Colo Lo Boza soccer school, based in the Chilean capital, was traveling to a youth tournament in Paraguay. The school is certified by Chile's first-division club Colo Colo. Chile's soccer federation said it "deeply regrets the death of the three young Chilean athletes involved in the tragic accident." Source
